Lords of Chaos

Brief Description
Here is a site dedicated to the development of Lords of Chaos.
End of Brief Description

What is L-O-C?

Lords of Chaos is a turn-based-strategy game. The player controls a wizard to explore forests, castles, caves and dungeons; hunting down monsters and collecting treasure. The wizard has a range of magical spells at his disposal; amongst these are spells to summon monsters of his own, and to brew magical potions; along with many others. However, the wizard is not alone. Others wizards with similar intentions make terrible opponents. Each scenario has unique monsters and challenges. L-O-C can be played single-player or multi-player.

L-O-C News:

I've discovered a problem with the files on CVS. anim.loc and mon.loc were not marked as being binary files, and so they were mangled by CVS whenever they were uploaded. As a result, every version of these two files on CVS is corrupt. Attempting to run the game with these corrupt files will cause it to crash. Current development of the game is not being carried out on Sourceforge, so I won't be updating the files on the Sourceforge CVS. But I have uploaded working copies of anim.loc and mon.loc so that anyone who wants to run the CVS version can do so without it crashing.

Update due to a forum request. The project is not dead, just quiet. As I've said on the forums, I don't want to build up too much hype before I have something decent to show you. So this website is deliberately keeping a low profile for the time being.

Where did that year go? Oh well, there's a new release of the L-O-C WIP; this brings L-O-C one big step closer to completion.
Unfortunatly it's going to be a lot harder for a lot of people to get it to compile. In this release I'm not spending the time to get it all nice and packaged, ready to go. That would take too long and I'd rather be working on the game. But it's all there, everything that is L-O-C; so in theory you should be able to get it to work!
I guess now more than ever you should look forward to the demo version, the first binary release, then you'll never have to worry about source code again...

Just a reminder to check the L-O-C Forums. They normally see more updates than this site does. I only post the big stuff here.

L-O-C now has a fully functional Python interpreter embedded in it. This means that level designers will be able to do almost anything with respect to spell effects, special attacks, in game switches/buttons/traps, etc. It's a very powerful feature.

And here it is: L-O-C WIP source June 2003. Maybe I'll have a bit more to say about it later on.

I apologise for the long gaps between site updates; but really, isn't it more important that I work on the game than work on the website? Having said that, I do plan one day, to redo the site so that it's more organised and shows more content. As for content, I suppose it's about time I showed a screenshot.
The programming side of L-O-C is coming along quite well. There is still a lot to do, but it's looking more like a game every day (every week). The next source release will most likely be in a couple of weeks.

- Just released: L-O-C WIP source March 2003. It's still not all that exciting, but it is coming along. Report any bugs or problems on the L-O-C Forums.

26th Feb 2003 OK, all old news aside. After some unexpected delays L-O-C is back on track.
- I've just put in a bit of object support; take and drop.
- I've changed the in game resolution from 640x400 to 640x480 after some people emailed me saying that it didn't work.
- I've done some new graphics and sounds, but I stress that all graphics and especially all sounds are placeholders only.
- Scened has been put aside. Since the structure of the game is still shifting around a lot I decided that it would be much easier to use a mixture of hard-coded data and text-based data for scenarios while L-O-C is growing.
- There won't be a Feb source release, but I think that perhaps it's just about time for a screenshot or 2. Expect that soon! Also, there should be a source release in March.
- I've had a few people email me with similar questions about L-O-C. I don't mind replying to the same question once or twice, but I think it would be easier if people would post any questions, suggestions, problems etc on the L-O-C Forums.

"What the hell is all this?" you say? Well, the L-O-C team are making a game based on Julian Gollop's Lords of Chaos; which was, in turn, based on one of his earlier games: Chaos - The battle of wizards. Lords of Chaos and Chaos are very different games, but you can easily see where a lot of the ideas for Lords of Chaos came from. The game in development here is based on Julian Gollop's Lords of Chaos.
I hope that clears things up for you...

If you want to see a Chaos clone, I think ChaosFunk looks promising.

If you've never heard of Chaos or of Lords of Chaos, you can download the originals here.

LOC Demo this is a bit like a tutorial on how to play LOC.
Chaos - Atari conversion of the original game
And here is a link to an online Spectrum Emulator, so you can see the very first version of Chaos in action. (The Atari version is better).

These are great games, but you must bare in mind that they are old; And so in being old you can't expect too much from the graphics or sound. Especially in the original, Chaos; written in 1984. So, really poor graphics and sound, but really good game-play. Hopefully this version of Lords of Chaos will deal with that fault, when it is complete.
